Donkey races were an old tradition in Sepurina. Up to the middle seventies, it was one of the main summer events. People used to come from neighbouring islands and coastal towns, either to watch, or to enter their animals in the race. During the seventies, work on the aquaducts cancelled the races. Several new buildings wrecked the "race track". By that time, donkeys started disappearing from the island (being replaced by tractors), and that meant the end of the races. All that remains now are memories and a few photos.

The 1973 race

The races always attracted crowds of people.

This was the first roll of film I ever shot.

The entire event was also "documented" with a cardboard camera.

The 1975 race

You can see the official race flag. Because of the tragic death of one of the champion racers (it had been run over by a car) the flag had been at half mast. This was the qualifying race for the grand finale, featuring animals from across the seas (Vodice, Tribunj, Srima).

The 1977 race

To my knowlege, this was the last race ever held. It featured the oldest donkey in Dalmatia 41 years old at the time, but as a spectator, not a contestant.
